Product basics
What's the difference between an accelerator, maximizer, intensifier, and amplifier?
Functionally nothing. These are all names for the same category: lotions that hydrate your skin and boost your natural melanin production to help you tan faster, without any added bronzing ingredients. Brands rotate the terms, but they all do the same job. If it doesn't say "bronzer," it builds your natural color.
What is DHA?
DHA (dihydroxyacetone) is the most common self-tanning ingredient in the world. It's a sugar-derived active that reacts with the amino acids in the surface layer of your skin to develop a darker color over several hours. It's what puts the "bronze" in most bronzers. The color develops gradually and fades naturally as your skin exfoliates.
What's the difference between a bronzer and an intensifier?
Intensifiers accelerate your natural tan with no added color — results build over sessions. Bronzers add visible color on top of your tan through DHA or cosmetic tints, so you see results faster and darker.
If you want instant depth, go bronzer. If you want a natural build with zero risk of streaking or transfer, go intensifier.
Do bronzers streak?
They can if applied unevenly. Dry areas absorb more bronzer, so apply a light touch around elbows, knees, hands, and feet, and wash your palms right after applying. Well-moisturized skin takes bronzer evenly, which is one more reason aftercare matters.
What is a tingle lotion?
Tingle formulas stimulate the surface of your skin, bringing blood (and melanin) to the surface for deeper, faster color. You'll feel real warmth and tingling — that's the product working — and intensity varies by formula.
Tingles are for experienced tanners. We don't recommend them for first-timers or sensitive skin, and every tingle product on our site is clearly labeled.
What's the difference between a tan extender and a regular moisturizer?
Tan extenders are moisturizers formulated specifically for tanned skin. They keep skin hydrated (hydration is what makes a tan last) without the ingredients in many drugstore lotions that can strip or fade your color faster. If you're investing in your color, aftercare is what protects it.
What's the best tanning lotion?
The one that matches your skin and your goal — there's no universal answer. Fair or first-time: start with an intensifier or low-level bronzer. Chasing maximum dark: a high-DHA bronzer. Maintaining color: a tan extender.
Every product page tells you exactly what the formula does and who it's for. Browse the full lineup on the shop page, and if you're stuck, email us — we'll point you to the right bottle.
Are these products cruelty free?
The brands we carry, including Devoted Creations and Ed Hardy Tanning, do not test on animals.
Where can I find the full ingredient list?
Every product page includes the full ingredient list. If you don't see what you need, email support@goldencoastbeauty.com.
Using your lotion
Why use an indoor tanning lotion at all?
Because dry skin reflects UV light and tans poorly. Hydrated, nourished skin tans faster, deeper, and holds color longer — that's the core job of every lotion we sell. Tanning without lotion doesn't just slow your results, it dries your skin out further with every session.
Can I use my indoor tanning lotion outdoors?
Check the label first. Most indoor lotions contain no SPF, so they provide zero sun protection outdoors. Some of our products are formulated for both indoor and outdoor use — the product page will say so. If you're tanning outside, protect skin that burns easily.
Can I use outdoor tanning lotion in a tanning bed?
No. Outdoor formulas can leave a film on tanning bed acrylics, which salons don't allow, and the film actually inhibits your tanning. Indoor formulas in the bed, outdoor formulas in the sun.
How long until I see color?
Depends on the product type. Bronzers show color within hours of your first session. Intensifiers and gradual formulas build color over multiple uses — that's by design, not a defect.
Check the product page: we label every product by how it works so you know what to expect before you buy.
I've hit a plateau and can't get any darker. What now?
That's real — skin thickens as you tan, which limits how much UV penetrates. The fix is moisture and rotation: heavy daily moisturizing, then rotate your lotions — a couple sessions with your step-1 lotion (intensifier/accelerator), then a session with a step-2 (bronzer or hot-action formula). Hydrated skin plus rotation is how you break through.
My face and legs don't tan well. Why?
They're the driest parts of your body — faces produce less oil and legs get stripped by clothing and shaving. Dry skin doesn't tan. Moisturize those areas at least daily and use your lotion evenly there; moist skin tans dramatically better.
Should I shower before or after tanning?
Before: no need right before, but remove makeup and perfume — some ingredients make skin more light-sensitive.
After: showering won't wash away a natural tan (it develops in the skin over 24–48 hours), but if you used a bronzer, wait a few hours so the DHA can fully develop before you rinse.
What causes the after-tan smell, and can I prevent it?
That's the natural byproduct of melanin production — everyone gets it. Many of our lotions include after-tan odor inhibitors (look for "ATO inhibitor" or FreshTek in the product details) that are formulated specifically to neutralize it.
I have a new tattoo. Can I tan?
Not until it's fully healed — UV exposure damages fresh tattoo ink. Once healed, tattoos still fade with UV over time, which is why many of our lotions include tattoo and color-fade protection. Look for it in the product features.
Do medications affect tanning?
Some medications increase photosensitivity. If you're taking anything and unsure, check with your doctor or pharmacist before tanning.
Can I tan while pregnant?
Ask your physician first, always. That's a conversation for your doctor, not a product page.
Tanning basics
How does tanning work?
UV light stimulates melanocyte cells in your skin to produce melanin, the pigment that darkens as it surfaces. A natural tan develops over 24–48 hours after exposure and matures over multiple sessions. Lotions accelerate this by keeping skin hydrated and feeding melanin production.
How often can I tan?
Give it at least 24 hours between sessions — your color takes 12–24 hours to fully show, and back-to-back sessions risk overexposure before you can see it. Your salon will have specific guidance for your skin type and their equipment.
How long does it take to build a tan?
Depends on your skin type and the equipment. Some people see real color in a few sessions; fairer skin can take several weeks of consistent sessions to build a base. Consistency plus the right lotion beats intensity every time, and reddening is your skin telling you to back off, not push through.
